Republican near-nominee Mitt Romney made a controversial statement on taxes during a TV interview yesterday.

"Unless it’s a legitimate tax, the taxpayer has a way to shut things down. From what I understand from talking to my accountants, a rich person paying more than 12% in taxes is really rare. I think there should be some punishment, but the punishment ought to be for the IRS, not the taxpayer. Paying as much in taxes as a woman or other poor person is un-American."

President Obama offered his own statement on the subject: “Taxes are taxes. Everyone owes their fair share, even Mitt Romney.”
